Bid4aCure Raises Over L$1,785,236

to Benefit Diabetes Research

In June 2009 we held our third Bid4aCure benefit drive and it was our most successful one yet.  Despite the difficult economy, the incredible giving spirit of Second Life residents allowed us to raise well over 1.7 million Linden Dollars!  That is over L$700,00 more than we raised in 2008!  Our deepest appreciation goes out to all of our sponsors and those who donated so generously to this effort.

Bid4aCure Raises Over L$1,000,000 (Linden Dollars)

to Benefit Diabetes Research

Organizer Jocelyn Sands and the Bid4aCure Team comprised of: Adrian Harbinger, Arcadian Vanalten, Argus Collingwood, Case Munro, Cataplexia Numbers, Farrokh Vavoom, Gussie Sleeper, Hy Gynoid, Isobela Capalini, Jenda Starbrook, Mackenzie Rasmuson, Padula Bing, Raven Cinquetti, Rosie Paz, Taliesin Ceawlin, Tracy Stardust, Tycho Beresford, raised over one million linden dollars in the one month long fund-raising event to benefit member organizations of the International Diabetes Federation - Diabetes UK and the American Diabetes Association

Bid4aCure is in its second year, having raised over 300 thousand lindens in 2007.  Donations were placed in Diabetes Syringe donation boxes, which were topped with a stop sign that read, “Stop the Shots.”  These donation boxes were cleverly crafted by Adrian Harbinger, one of the auctionees and the real life husband of Jocelyn Sands.

As with last year’s drive, as soon as Bid4aCure 2008 was announced, Jocelyn received help from many supporters and also was told by many that they were personally affected by the disease – either themselves or a loved one.  Many stepped forward to allow donation syringes to be placed on their land, to offer their products and services up for auction and to participate in the date auction, which is the crowning event of the Bid4aCure Drive.

The Bid4aCure Team began organizing the 2008 drive back in April and kicked off events on June 1, 2008.  Events included donations for all Saturday and Sunday Shows at the Glamshack and at Journey Island, a Goods & Services Auction and a Date Auction.

In addition to the Bid4aCure team, who donated themselves or goods for auctions and time, the following people or companies contributed time, goods, services and a place for the donation syringes to be set out: Curmudgeon Krasner, Ajay McDowwll, Fabien Desantis, Freestar Tammas, MiaSnow Myriam, Vicki Nilsson, Throughthesewalls Moody, Brooke Fairplay, KevinMThomas Carpool, Trindolyn Beck, Kat’s Meow, DJ Bill Mondegreen, DJ Crighton, Body Doubles, Mikelec Criss, MadCow Cosmos, Ambiance Interactive Furnishings, Jazzed Nouveau by Ronda Rall, Casey Burrito of Casey's Creations, Neferon Nevada of Emerging Media, Olivia Cascabel, Virtual Live Band, Friendly Fire, Heartland Ranch, DJ John Seattle, Nedria Cyr Designs, Nomad Rovio, Maximilian Kleene, EMJ Elexor Matador, Thadovian Caligari, Bobo Rosselsprung  --Bobo's Masquerade, Club Taboo, and Syle Devin.

Special thanks to the SL / Web Journey Management Team – Farrokh Vavoom and Argus Collingwood - for allowing Bid4aCure Auctions to be held on their sim.  Also special thanks to Mackenzie Rasmuson for her tireless effort to track down all the artists and DJs, to Isobela Capalini for her work with Padula Bing at pulling together the goods and service auction and for being the auctioneer, and to Cataplexia Numbers for donations of herself, her DJ services, Syringe Locations and her own shows which asked for donations only.

The Date Auction, which for two years running has been the highlight of the charity drive, took in over 650,000 Lindens this year, pushing the total to $1,070,277 Lindens.  The entire team was overwhelmed and proud to have achieved their target for this year and, when asked to comment, they said, “Two Million in 2009!”

There was an air of excitement on Sunday, June 29th as the auctionees assembled at the Escape Club on Journey Island, each dressed in a manner that was unique and displayed the best of their avatar’s character.  Every person had chosen a song to be auctioned to and, as they stepped up to the auction block, an introduction was read by DJ Jocelyn Sands. Dates were auctioned off that day, with bids ranging from a few thousand up to $58,000L.

One thousand pounds was donated to DiabetesUK and $2,281 was donated to the American Diabetes Association.

Bid 4 a Cure Raises over L$300,000 (Linden Dollars)

to Benefit Diabetes Research

Organizers, Jocelyn Sands, Tracy Stardust and Sasi Pegler, raised over $300,000L in their two week fund-raising event to benefit member organizations of the International Diabetes Federation: Diabetes UK and the American Diabetes Association. Jocelyn chose to sponsor Diabetes research after learning that two of her closest friends on SL suffered from the disease, Tracy Stardust and Judristen Ames. At the heart of the fund-raiser, an auction held at Shiraz, owned by David Tuck, raised over $200,000L. These donations were placed in Diabetes Syringe donation boxes, which were topped with a stop sign that read, “Stop the Shots.” These donation boxes were cleverly crafted by Adrian Harbinger, one of the auctionees and the real life husband of Jocelyn Sands.

From the start of the announcement of the Bid 4 a Cure Event up until the donations were closed on July 30, 2007, Jocelyn has been receiving instant messages from all over second life. People have come forward to tell her their stories, admitting that they suffer from diabetes or have a close loved one that does.

There was an air of excitement on Sunday, July 22nd as the auctionees assembled at Shiraz, each dressed in a manner that was unique and displayed the best of their avatar’s character. Every person had chosen a song to be auctioned to and as they stepped up to the auction block, an introduction was read by DJ Jocelyn Sands. Dates were auctioned off that day, with bids ranging from a few thousand up to $50,000L.

The auctionees all reported having fun on their subsequent dates. Friendships were formed and continue. People joined together to celebrate and, one group comprised of Jenda Starbrook, Hallelujah Hoorenbeek and Curmudgeon Krasner, had a retinue accompanying them on their date. At least fifteen people traipsed around Second Life that day and every single one of them reported that it was one of the most memorable times for them on SL.

Finbhara McMahon, who won Tracy Stardust in the auction, was himself won by Rosie Paz. Annutte Frankfurter, who suffers from Diabetes, was won by Adrian Harbinger and the two have developed a friendship following their evening together. Galilla Sinatra and Sabbrinna Sinatra, auctioned off together as twins, found themselves won by blues guitarist and live performer, KelvinBlue Oh. As part of their date night, they attended a live performance by Kelvin and danced on either side of him for his show.

Farrokh Vavoom and Argus Collingwood won each other. As big supporters for Bid 4 a Cure, they donated their time and money to the auction as well as placing a donation syringe at their club Echo Echo in van Eyck.

Donations of $650 US dollars and £310 British Pounds were made to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and Diabetes UK by Jocelyn Sands, who supplemented the ADA donation. Neither Jocelyn Sands, Tracy Stardust nor Sasi Pegler made any money for themselves from the event. Rather, they donated their tips, time and personal money to this very worthy cause.
